FOW Armored Artillery

So after several FOW games, I finally decided that I needed something with longer range than mortars, and with more reliability than air power, so I invested in a battery of Armored Artillery, and a full 6 gun battery of Nebelwefers. The "moaning minis" aren't done yet, but the armored arty was finished a couple of days ago. I'll try 'em out with my Panzer company against Milton at some point and see how they do. I'm finally learning how to use armor effectively, but because we're Germans, the points get constricting VERY fast. Happily that won't happen with my US Paratroopers, since they can't really take much anyway. Either way, hopefully I'll be painting up 2 panthers for a Cobra Mission in a couple of weeks, another Tiger I, and just for the heck of it, I'm going to go for a Tiger II to see how he does :) Also got some magnets so the III Ns can be changed to III Ms at a moment's notice (right now, 2/4 are Ms, so I need to change barrels).

So my painted panzer force now is:

Command:
CinC Panzer IIIN
2inC Panzer IVG

Combat:
Pz III N Platoon
Pz IVG Platoon

Weapons:
2 Armored Quad 2cm AA in halftracks

Support:
3 gun battery of Wespes (10.5cm arty)
2 8rad Recon vehicles

28mm Australians

A buddy and I got into WW2 skirmish for a while, so I got a platoon of aussies. Decided to paint 'em up in jungle kit since it looks nice (I'm sick of desert camo), and they can fight either AfrikaKorps or the Imperial Japanese. Either way, here was a test shot that I did. Alas, I finished a whole squad but the dullcoat covered them in a weird white powder (not undercoat but pretty close), so I had to paint them again. I've been holding off, as I've been doing more FOW for a bit (see later)

Imperial Guard Command Squads

Also finished the command squads, so I can finally field a legal army. In the background, you can see the squad of mortars that are also complete. I'm quite proud of these guys since its the most conversions I've done.

That brings my painted force up to:
Company Commander + Squad
Platoon Commander + Squad
2 x Reg Infantry Squads + Autocannons
1 x Reg Inf Squad (but will have to be armored fist unless I paint up another squad and platoon command...)
2 Leman Russ Tanks
1 Demolisher Tank
3 Sentinals

So to get my force up to 1500 pts, I have to do a Chimera transport, Lascannon Squad, Some Heavy bolters etc., but the main core is done

Imperial Guard Tanks

Ok, so here's the first post. Basically I've been trying to finish my Tallarn Imperial Guard for like 10 years now. FINALLY, I've gotten some head way into them the past 2 years. This year, I finished the platoon of Leman Russ Tanks (2 + 1 Demolisher). Here they are. Actually, the regular tank got a 3rd place in the Large Sci Fi section of Kublacon's 2008 convention painting contest.

Review of "The Horus Heresy: Collected Visions"

I just finished reading the Horus Heresy: Collect vision book and it was outstanding. I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of it from the Oakville Battle bunker when I was there for the Canadian GT. For less than $70 it was a steal. It is cover to cover outstanding artwork, detailing loads of pre-heresy units and organizations all the way up to the Emperor being encased in the Golden Throne. In addition to all the art it gives a detailed account of what happened during the heresy. All of the history ties into the Horus Heresy series of novels being put out by the Black Library. If you enjoy 40k and are interested in learning more about the history of the Imperium or are simple looking for great modeling ideas, I highly recommend this book. It has also given me the inspiration to turn my Grey Knights into a Legio Custodians army.

Canadian Grand Tournament 2008

Hey all,

This past weekend I headed to the Battlebunker in Oakville ON to play in the Canadian GT 2008. I was playing my freshly painted Deathwing modeled after the original Deathwing from the short story. The Army is definitely a finesse one and a couple of times I made the mistake of letting a horde get to close without softening them up first. I will update with more pictures as I get them, hope you enjoy. I had a great time, thank you to all my opponents and travel companions for making it a great weekend!

Army List
HQ
Master of the Deathwing (Cloudrunner) with Storm bolter and MC Power sword
Librarian with Terminator armour, Storm bolter, Force weapon and Psychic hood

Troops
Deathwing Command Squad with Assault cannon, chain fist x1, apothecary and lighting claws x1
Deathwing Squad with Assault cannon, chain fist x1 and lighting claws x1
Deathwing Squad with Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields and Cyclone Missile launcher
3 x Deathwing Squads with Heavy Flamer and Lighting claws x1

Game 1 Deathwing vs Ray Shields' Tyrnaids
Table: City Fight
Msn: kill opponents general
End result: less than 50 pt difference = Tie
Comments: Great game that came down to the wire and literally the last turn. My army was not meant for taking on horde armies and this game was an example of me happening to hang around and score enough pts to get a tie.

Game 2 Deathwing vs Jay Pinhay's Orks
Table: City Fight
Msn: table quarters
End result: Massacre against (Oz'ed, like as in the prison show)
Comments: The game had escalation and I was able to kill 500 pts of his army in the first turn (everything on the board). The rest of his army showed up and 1200 pts of Orks killed my 1700 pts of Deathwing to a man and took all table quarters. I think if I had been a little more conservative I could have brought this to a tie but Orks in a city are hard to deal with.

Game 3 Deathwing vs Josh Steinhilder's Tyrnaids
Table: Water and Jungle
End result: Major victory for
Comments: Josh was playing a Steeler heavy force with a 2 shooty fex's, a shooty tyrant and a flying CC tyrant. By the end of the game he had one fex left and he was backing up as the Deathwing started to surround him.

Game 4 Deathwing vs Scott Wilson's Death Guard
Table: City Fight
End result: Massacre for
Comments: Scott's luck was dicey at best and left him in the 3rd turn to never return. Mine was retarded and I didn't fail a save (either type) from then on. Deathwing are very good at killing Death Guard.

Game 5 Deathwing vs Paul Nelson's Orks
Table: Open planes
End result: less than 100 pt difference tie
Comments: Paul's Army is amazing and he won best presentation for it. Both Paul and I played the character of our armies and it made for an awesome amount of CC throughout the game. Kudos go to his Stormboyz nob who killed my Librarian in CC.

Overall I had a great time and met a bunch of new gamers including Yoshi, who ended up winning best overall. I needed up placing 15 out of 32 and learn a lot of valuable lessons about how to play an all terminator army.

The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) comes to the tabletop!

Hello All,

I started learning how to play Flames of War (FOW) a couple of months ago. For those of you that are unfamiliar with FOW it is a Second World War table top war game where the infantry are about 10 mm. for planes the scale is about 1/144. I have decided to make a Canadian Army modeled after The RCR 'A Coy' which landed in Sicily under the command of R.G. 'Slim' Liddell. It is a mid war force that was initally planed for 1760 pts but has ballooned to well above that. I'm still working on my Deathwing force in preparation for the Canadian Grand Tournament and will be posting finished units and details on the GT once I have them. If you haven't tried FOW I highly recommend it. It is quite possibly the best game system I have ever played.
