Killa Kan #1

This is the last model I painted for this army and I have to say it is the best as far as the rusted/worn look goes. The way I have been doing both the rust effect and the chipped paint have evolved a lot since the war boss (now instead of doing a black under coat I just paint the dark blue paint right on the rust). There are 3 more in this unit and all 3 have this level of detail on the base.

Ork Nob

So far of all the models I have painted/converted for this army this is my fav. His body is actually an old Ogryn special character and his powerclaw (or power chain saw...OF DOOM!) is taken from the super old Epic Gargant. To actually affix the arm to the body I used a fair amount of green stuff and I actually scuplted his shoulder on that army from scratch.

Ork Warboss

As a change of pace I am going to post a couple models from the Ork army that I am currently working on. This army is easily my most ambitious army as I am trying to do as much as possible with the bases (making scenic bases) as well as experimenting with painting Rust and chipped paint.

Here is the first of 3 posts and this is my warboss. A lot of converting work went into this guy and I am really proud of the overall look.

'Ard Boyz, coming this July to Canada!

So 'Ard Boyz has finally made it to Canada! I for one am looking forward to playing in this event. I know that it is a no holds bared contest of winner takes all and since it is being advertised as such I'm not going to be surprised. I feel it is important to note that although I really like this kind of tournament, I really like the older Hall of Heros style where painting, sportsmanship and composition were worth just as many points as win/loss ratio.

So without further ado, here is the list that I'm planning on taking to 'ard boyz.

Codex: Imperial Guard

HQ
Coy Comd Squad with Creed, Vox, Medic, 2 x Meltaguns, OoF, Astropath mounted in Chimera

Grey Knight Grand Master with Psychic hood, Scared Incense and Retinue of 4 Grey Knight Terminators one with Psycannon

Elites
Inq in Terminator Armour with Power weapon and Psycannon, 2 Mystics mounted in Land Raider

Troops
Platoon A
Pl Comd Squad with Al'Rahem, 3 x meltaguns and vox mounted in Chimera
Squad 1 vox and flamer mounted in Chimera
Squad 2 vox and flamer mounted in Chimera

Platoon B
Pl Comd Squad with Bolt pistol, vox and lascannon
Squad 1 vox and lascannon
Squad 2 vox and lascannon

Heavy support
2 x Hydra's with storm bolters

Leman Russ Vanquisher with lascannon and crewed by Pask

2 x Leman Russ Demolisher with lascannon and plasma cannon sponsons

Gives me 6 scoring units and 19 KPs. I'm thinking that GK out of an outflanking LR with furious charge will ruin a lot of peoples days. Or how about outflanking (or scouting) Demolishers!

I still haven't play tested the list yet, but I'm hoping that I get the chance within the next week. If I do make changes to the list I will let you know what and why.

Tyranid Warriors

As promised here are my Tyranid Warriors. Each one took around 4 hours total (except the one with the marine on his base, he took about 6 since I treated the marine as a seperate model). I think so far these models were my fav to paint (although the tyrant was pretty fun too). So in about a month and a half I have finished a Hive Tyrant, Brood Lord, 8 Genesteelers, 3 Tyranid Warriors and 20 Hormagaunts. My goal is to have this army finished by October so in the next 3 months I need to finish 2 Carnifexs, 40 Termigants, 2 Lictors, 8 Raveners, 3 Warriors and 3 Zoanthropes lol....sigh

Next Up: First Unit of Termigants (20)

Games Day Toronto 09

I just got back from GD 09 and it was a blast. I managed to pick up the Venerable Dreadnoughts and other Forge World bits that I'm fellow Legionaries were looking for and a couple other goodies. Here is a picture of the up coming Ork Battle Wagon sprue and me talking with Dan Abnett.

US Para Teaser

Ok, so these guys didn't quite turn out as well as I had hoped, but it is nice to know that I spent Saturday watching Band of Brothers, and painting these guys. Got 40 of 'em done so far (in random teams), but another 24 on the table. Soon, I'll have a full Company of 3 platoons, zookas, and snipers ready to rock out.

I'm finding doing that "magic wash" thing quite hard to do on these guys so I might just go with the highlighting bags etc., and only wash the uniforms, otherwise I'll be here FOREVER...

Tyranid Update #3: The Broodlords Retinue. I have been super busy painting trying to get enough of this army finished to actually play a game as I havent actually played a single game of 40k in over a year and a half lol (basically last game was 4th ed). After finishing this I am one step closer.

Next up: Tyranid Warriors!

Genestealer Painting Tutorial

I have had a couple friends of mine ask me to post a step by step turtorial on how I am painting this army. So here it goes :)

Step 1) After putting together the model and priming it I always go over all my models with a watered down layer of black paint. This gives you a nicer surface to paint with and gives you complete coverage over the entire model. The first thing I did with this Genestealer is to do all the green fleshy bits that sit under the carapace. The reason for that is so you dont mess up the brown finish, and its really easy to paint around during the later stages as its the deepest part of the model. The flesh parts of this army are painted using Orchide Green, Knarloc Green and Scorpion Green.

Step 2) This steps is actually two steps combined. The first half is doing a quick dry brushing layer of Scorched Brown over the entire model, making sure you dont hit the green parts. The second half (which is what the picture is of) is done using Beastial Brown. This step instead of dry brushing I hand painted everything on, making sure to paint along the contours of the model, leaving small spaces between each stroke to start giving the appearence of a bone like carapace.

Step 3) I used Tallaran Flesh and painted over all the brown in the same style as the second half of step 2, except this time I put more distance between strokes.

Step 4) For the shoulders I did the exact same steps from 1-3 as the brown, except this time I used Liche Purple, A mixture of Liche Purple and Tenticle Pink (which sadly you cant get any more), then a mixture of Tenticle Pink and White.

Step 5) The final details were added. The black for the claws was finished using a mixture Chaos Black and Codex Grey (80-20), then straight highlights with Codex Grey then final Highlights with Fortress Grey. The Eyes are just yellow with small ticks of white paint for the teeth.
Step 6) The base. The ground on the base is Scorched Brown, the first highlight is Tausept Ochre and the final highlight is Bleached Bone. I find for basing its really important to use extreme highlights when doing the sand, since you want a huge amount of definition in what you are painting. If you used say Scorched Brown then Bestial Brown the contrast wouldnt be enough, and the definition of the sand would be lost. The ring around the base is Orchide Green.

The entire model was done with a #3 brush (so a very large brush) and it took about 1 1/2 - 2 hours total. I find that is one of the single most important things for painting models quickly is using a large brush. The second is setting up an easy to paint colour scheme. This army only has 4 colours total, all of which are easy to paint (brown, purple, green and black). Armies that are done with bright colours (ie yellow, orange and red) take way longer, as you need way more coats to get a solid colour. That being said the new GW foundation paint set helps out a lot on these colours. If you have any questions at all, please post and I will do my best to answer them :)

A bunch of spikey Carth Spearmen

Not based yet I know, but these guys have been sitting for a bit waiting for the final push, so I figured I'd just take their pic. I was especially proud of my hand drawn shields copied from a website that makes carth shield transfers.

Carth Spearmen, 36 of 'em. Now onto the elephants.. There only 6 of them.

Black Templar Finally

Its taken me months, but I finally painted (whilst waiting for my Nebelwefers to dry) a black Templar. This guy is one of the plastic non posable ones you get in the boxed starter set, so I figured that squad would make a good test bed.

He turned out not bad. I was a little heavy handed with the highlights, and will have to be more subtle as I do more of 'em, but he's certainly table quality. I want to really practice the eyes. That green is just eery!

What are you waitin' for Tommy? For Ze Germans??

Finally finished the Nebelwefers for my FOW army. So the campaign I'll be playing in a week or two should be lots of fun. This got me juiced up enough to start painting my US paras too. Or maybe the Panther Platoon.... I still need to do the dull coat on these guys, and a little touch up here and there (such as shading under the arty pieces), but bascially they are done done done.

Tyranid Army Update #2

My second update for the new Tyranid Army is Brood Lord. I actually did a fair amount of converting on this guy since I want my army to be as WSYWIG as humanly possible. So I cut off his head using a pair of clippers and using green stuff I glued the plastic genestealer feeder tendrils head in its place. I then built up the green stuff around his neck to make it look like part of the model. He also has extended carapace, so I added that as well. He took about 6-8 hours in total and I am very happy with the final product.

Tyranid Army Update #1

Here are a couple of pics of my newly finished 20 man strong unit of Hormagaunts. Unit took about 2 weeks of fairly regular painting, and for these two pics I only took pictures of the ones I liked best in the unit (there are 7 I think). Enjoy!
