Big Willie is Back Baby!!!

Master of the Ravenwing and his Libraian dismantle the remaining guardsmen

Hello all,

It's taken some time but I've finally gotten the awful taste of my last tournament game out of my mouth and managed to get in a couple games with the newest Legionnaire Regicide.  The initial intent was to play a series of games where the Dark Angels were looking for several of the Fallen who had taken over the government of a local planet.  In the end we played one game then switched to Wolves vs Dark Angels (almost like one of the Space Wolf books).  We used my iPhone to take pictures so unfortunately they won't be as good as we all like.  The first game was my Ravenwing against his Imperial Guard at 1000 pts.  The lists looked something like this:

Legio Minimus welcomes Regicide!

Hello All,

I've just gotten back from a course that started in Sept.  The highlight was meeting someone that is going to be a new contributing Legionnaire.  He's been playing 40k for a long time but took a break for a while but kept up with the goings on through the Black Library.  We managed to get 2.5 games in during the course so those battle reports will be coming along shortly.  I look forward to seeing his models and painting as much as his short stories and narratives.   Stay tuned!

Lest we forget....

I just wanted to say thank you to all the Men and Women in uniform that have served their country over the years and paid the ultimate price for our freedom.  Their sacrifice will never be forgotten and I am eternally grateful.

I can't wait to see his first post!

40k Skirmish 2011 Round 4 Space Wolves vs Imperial Guard in "First Stop No mans land then the Enemies Base!"

Wolves Make it into the guard line and start tearing them to pieces (finally ;) )

Round 4 was objective based with one objective in each deployment zone and one in the centre.  I played against Chris who is a very skilled player and veteran of Adepticon.  He had just lost against Will Paul and I think had he won that game he would have been playing for the top spot in the tournament.  His list looked something like this:

HQ
Command Squad with Plasma and banner

Elites
Psyker Battle squad in Chimera

Troops

10 x veterans with Melta in Chimera

Pack Attack at Game Summit 2011

A couple of weekends ago I had the chance to attend Ottawa's Game Summit held at the Napean Sports complex.  In a word it was awesome!  There were games of every variety and style, there was vendors, painting clinics and a garage sale.  In my opinion this is exactly what a gaming convention should be and the 40k tournament had 65 entries with the best overall and best sportsman winning tickets to the Grand Tournament in Las Vegas.  The tournament was 1850 points with normal composition rules.

This is never a good roll, but was it for the wolves.....

The Pack grows!

With Game Summit 2011 only a week and a half away it's time that I finish off my wolves.  Here are the final models that I need to paint and what will likely be the hardest hitting part of my Army.  A Wolf lord with TH/SS and Saga of the Bear, a Wolf Lord with FB/SS and Saga of Warrior born and Canis Wolf Born.  Coupled with 10 Fenrisian wolves to help get them into combat.  I have 10 days and an iPod with a camera so I'm planning on posting pictures as I finish off the army.  From the looks of it there is going to be everything from Nobz biker lists, Heavy Monstrous creatures, Hordes, Super mobile BA and super shootie Imperial Guard.  Should make for an interesting Tournament and the best overall and best general will get tickets to the GT in Las Vegas!  Stay tuned for more updates!

The RCR vs Americans in Hold the Line

This was a 1500 pt Mid-War game between my Canadians and Joyous Oblivion from Druken Gamers of Ottawa Americans. We played Hold the Line with me defending.

My Army
Coy Comd and 2IC
3 x Rifle Platoon with Piat
1 x Sherman III Platoon (3 x tanks)
1 x Carrier Patrol (3 x Carriers)
1 x HMG Platoon (4 x HMGs)
1 x Anti-Tank Platoon (4 x 6 Pdrs)
1 x Field Battery (8 x 25 Pdrs)

The Americans
Sherman III HQ (IC and 2IC)
Sherman III Platoon (4 x tanks)
Stuart Platoon (5 x tanks)
Tank destroy Platoon (2 M60s, 2 Jeeps)
Motorized Rifles (5 x Half tracks, 5 x LMGs, 1 x Anti-tank gun, 5 Mortars)
Recce Platoon (2 x Jeeps and 1 x Half track)

The Canadians managed to survive a couple of assaults because JO failed his motivation check and I was able to Mike target tanks that had fallen back, this allowed tanks that were bailed last turn to be destroyed.

My Shermans finally proved there worth by out ranging and hammering the 2IC and a couple other platoons. JO is still learning (not that I'm much further a head) and is going to be a very dangerous player in short order.

I also didn't like how my Shermans were painted (I liked the paint job but not for this army), so I'm repainting them the ubiquitous olive drab, pictures are coming soon.

Let me know what you guys would prefer, video or pictures for the battle reports.

Canadians vs Germans in break through.avi

A special thank you to Matt Varnish from Druken Gamers of Ottawa who filmed this and has it on his blog (check it out)!

I was lucky enough to head over to Ca$h's this friday to get in some FoW. We were playing Mid-War 1500 points with the Break through mission. Ca$h just got a bunch of new terrain in as you can see from the battlefield it looks awesome. This was the first time I played Break through and the game was much closer than it should have been, Ca$h was well a head and some unlucky dice rolls delayed his win (it could have gone either way about 5 or 6 times and the roll of the dice kept us in and guessing).

My list was as follows using the North Afrika Intelligence book

Infantry Company

Coy Comd and 2IC
3 x Rifle Platoon with Piat
1 x Sherman III Platoon (3 x tanks)
1 x Carrier Patrol (3 x Carriers)
1 x HMG Platoon (4 x HMGs)
1 x Anti-Tank Platoon (4 x 6 Pdrs)
1 x Field Battery (8 x 25 Pdrs)

Ca$h was running a Panzer Coy with (I think this was right, also from the North Afrika book, I believe)

Coy Comd and 2IC in Panzer IVs
1 x Panzer IIIe Platoon (2 x tanks)
1 x Panzer IIIb Platoon (2 x tanks)
1 x Stug Platoon (3 x tanks)
1 x Panzer Gernadiers (4 x half tracks and Infantry Platoon)

MVP for the game was a tie between the Artillery (who were incredibly good all game) and the Infantry Platoon holding the objective that killed the Stug platoon in assault.

Bone 'eads of the game for me was the Shermans who lined up facing the wrong way and were killed in the opening salvo of the game (oooopppsss!)

The RCR falling in for FoW

The group of guys that I normally play with from Drunken Gamers of Ottawa have gotten into Flames of War (FoW) in a big way. They turned me onto a podcast/blog called WWPD (What would Patton Do?) which is an outstanding resource and I would highly recommend taking a look. As always with gamers their excitement is extremely contagious so I suddenly had the motivation to finish painting A Company from The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR). I've also finished the Heavy Machine Gun platoon and a Sherman III platoon that supports the Company.

Company Commander and Company 2IC

Canadian Rifle Company (Italy)
Heavy Machine Gun Platoon

Company with attached HMGs

Sherman IIIs Platoon

Closer view of Sherman IIIs
Platoon Commander of the Sherman IIIs

I'm hoping to do a Video Battle report of my next game similiar to the 40k I have done in the past. Next up will be the Arty Battery or the Anti-tank Platoon, not sure which!

Prospero Burns Review

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of the latest instalment of the Horus Heresy, Prospero Burns. This novel tells the other half of the epic battle for the Thousand Sons home planet, Prospero. Unlike most of the Heresy novels that follow Primarchs, Dan Abnett follows Kasper Causer as he is initially protected by native Fenrisians and then by the Space Wolves. Kasper, aka Ahmed Ibn Rustah, is an academic who enables us to understand the mind set and logic of the Sixth Legion. This understanding includes everything from how members admit their mistakes (I have seen the error of my ways and will work to correct it (worked awesome with my Wife!)), to what scares the Space Wolves and how they deal with that fear. Through out the book we are transported back into Kaspers memories where we learn more about the Council of Unification and it transitions into the Imperium of Man. We see the Rout's (one of the Space Wolves names for themselves (like Clan)) perspective on the ceremony at Ullanor and the council of Neakea. It isn't until we are about 7/8 through the book that the Wolves land on Prospero. There are several secrets that are revealed, which I won't spoil but make for a very enjoyable and informative read. Abnett did a great job encapsulating the Wolves and their mind set when it comes to life, death and war. I have been a Space Wolf player since they were the first codex brought out in 2nd edition 40k and this book did more than them justice in my mind. The only thing that I would have liked to seen was more of how the Space Wolves interact with the other Legions as part of the great crusade. If you get a chance to pick it up I highly recommend it as either a stand alone if your a fan of the Wolves and as a must read if your a fan of the the HH.

Book Review: The First Heretic by Aaron Dembski-Bowden

I just finished reading the latest instalment of the Black Library New York Times best selling series the Horus Heresy. I can honestly say that I thought is was the best book yet! This is the first book that I've read by Aaron Dembski-Bowden and I will be picking his other books up shortly. I won't spoil the book for anyone that wants to read it but basically it tells the story of the Word Bearers and their Primarch Lorgar Aurelian from about a century into the Great Crusade until just after Istevaan V.

Some of the cool points in this book are; It is the first that that we see the Legio Custodes (besides Valdor) play a larger part of the story. This is the second time that learn a first founding chapter's name before they were reunited with their Primarch (the Word Bearers were called the Imperial Heralds). Aaron does a great job of making you cheer for the "bad guy", you know the betrayal that will happen and yet you can find yourself agreeing with it in may cases. Not to mention all the background and understanding of how and why the Word Bearers began setting the stage for the Horus Heresy.

If your a fan of the Heresy novels you definitely need to pick this book up. If your a fan of just good fiction, I would totally recommend this novel as it manages to encompass so much of the Heresy you don't really need to have read the other ones. I can't wait to read the next instalment, Prospero Burns.

Wet Palette

A friend of mine post a picture and quick instructions on how to make a wet palette so I decided to give it a try (thanks JO). I can not over state how cool this completely inexpensive tool is and how I will never again not use one. You will need several house hold items to make this and it will likely not cost you anything but a little time.

Items required:
1 x Tupperware (or something similar)
Paper towel
Parchment paper
Pencil (something to trace the shape of your contain with)
Water
Scissors (or other cutting tool)

Construction:
Trace the shape of your container onto the Paper towel and Parchment paper
Cut several sheets of paper towel and the Parchment paper
Place the Paper towel into the container then wet it (about 3 - 5 mm of water, you want it so the paper towel is wet all the way through but not dripping water)
Place the Parchment paper on top of the Paper towel
Your done!

This is what mine looked like.
I started using this after I had built it and the paint you can see is still as wet and as fresh as the day I took it out (over 48hrs after I put it on the palette) I literally only had to take about 2 or 3 drops from the paint pot before I closed it and didn't need to use it again (bye bye wasted paint clumps on your painting table)!
I figure this is going to open a whole new range of potential painting options for blending colours. I also could believe how easy it was to paint. Normally the paint will start to dry out and that causes the brush to stick at times or for you to get less than ideal coverage, these are problems of the past with this bad boy. I will post some of my touched up and redone Space Wolves once they are complete. Try it out for yourself and see the difference it makes.

VBR 5 Space Wolves vs Tyranids

Here is the latest VBR pitting my Space Wolves against Matt Varnishes Tyranids in a 1500 pts Kill point, with Table quarter deployment. It was a great game that came down to a single kill point. I have to start paying more attention to the mission and the time left.

Webway Revealed!

For those of you that are interested Imperial spies were able to secure a copy of the Eldar webway in the Locara sector. By doing this the Eldar (both normal and dark have now become their own faction. No news on how this will work, but it is going to be interesting to see the changes within the Sector.
