Tyranid Battle Report!

Over the weekend I finally managed to get my first game in with the new Tyranid Codex. I couldn’t really decide which type of list I wanted so I figured I would just throw down all my big bugs and see how it went. I played against my friend Jason who has an amazing look Nurgle Army. We have had a few battles in the past and it has always been a tight game and I figured this would be more of that.

Welcome to 6th Edition...The Tournament!

Over the weekend I attended a great little tournament at my local game store (Imaginary Wars). The tournament was on the smaller side with only 14 people attending and despite the low-ish number it was one of the more competitive tournaments I have been to in ages. All the armies were painted really well and there were tones of variation in the armies that showed up.

Tyranids Invade Tournament OP!

OP Tournament Over the weekend I attended my first tournament since the Spearhead tournament I did at the end of November last year. I was really looking forward to this one just because of how long it had been since I have attended any event. I decided after reading all the reports from Adepticon from this year I was going to play my Tyranids since not a single tournament player showed up there and everyone sees the army as dead on the tourney scene (well..which it kind of is lol).

This tournament had a couple things that were much different from your regular tournament. First off instead of using the standard force organization chart it used a percentage system almost identical to fantasy with an added limitation of only being able to select a max of 2 of the same elites and 3 of the same heavy. The rest of the army building process for people (like myself) who didn’t play fantasy was as follows: 25% max for HQ, 25% Min for troops, a max of 50% for elites and heavy combined and a max of 50% fast attack. The thing I noted is that I couldn’t really build an army outside the standard force org chart as all my lists could fit in either system. I also didn’t play against anyone or saw any list that had 4+ elites, fast attack or heavy support. It begs the question of why even use the % system at such a small points value (the tourney was 1600pts)?

The Reg Stikes Back!

 The Wolf vs The Lion!

Game 2 between Regicide and I was initially going to be another game of Guard vs Wolves but we decided to do something different and play the Lion vs the Wolf.  We played another 1000 pt game so that we could get the game in during the evening without losing too much sleep.  The listed looked something like this.

Troops
Terminator Command Squad with Medic, Cyclone, Standard bearer, 3 x LC, 2 x TH/SS
Terminator Squad with

Fast Attack

Big Willie is Back Baby!!!

Master of the Ravenwing and his Libraian dismantle the remaining guardsmen

Hello all,

It's taken some time but I've finally gotten the awful taste of my last tournament game out of my mouth and managed to get in a couple games with the newest Legionnaire Regicide.  The initial intent was to play a series of games where the Dark Angels were looking for several of the Fallen who had taken over the government of a local planet.  In the end we played one game then switched to Wolves vs Dark Angels (almost like one of the Space Wolf books).  We used my iPhone to take pictures so unfortunately they won't be as good as we all like.  The first game was my Ravenwing against his Imperial Guard at 1000 pts.  The lists looked something like this:

40k Skirmish 2011 Round 4 Space Wolves vs Imperial Guard in "First Stop No mans land then the Enemies Base!"

Wolves Make it into the guard line and start tearing them to pieces (finally ;) )

Round 4 was objective based with one objective in each deployment zone and one in the centre.  I played against Chris who is a very skilled player and veteran of Adepticon.  He had just lost against Will Paul and I think had he won that game he would have been playing for the top spot in the tournament.  His list looked something like this:

HQ
Command Squad with Plasma and banner

Elites
Psyker Battle squad in Chimera

Troops
30 x man squad with autocannons, power swords and a commisar
10 x veterans with Melta in Chimera
10 x veterans with Meltas and Lascannon in Chimera

Heavy Support

Tyranids Battle Report!

As a follow up to the Tyranid Tactica articles I have been writing I decided I would do a battle report to show off certain lists in action. A couple of weeks ago I played my friend Nick using a "Come From All Sides" type army list. I decided to try out a couple things I have never used in this edition of the codex. The biggest one is a Flying Hive Tyrant (although, I don't have one so he is represented by my regular hand to hand Tyrant on the board). I basically made up this army a 100% for fun (in regards to my choices) with the overall theme of assaulting my opponents on my terms instead of just footslogging across the board and getting shot. So, without further adieu here is the report.

Here are the two lists in the battle:

"They're all around us!" - All Reserve Nid list 2000pts

HQ
Flying Hive Tyrant - Wings, 2xScything Talons, Hive Commander, Paroxysm, Leech Essence

Elites
Hive Guard (2)
Zoanthropes (3) - Mycetic Spore

Troops
Genestealers (9+Broodlord) - Toxin Sacs, Broodlord w/ Scything Talons
Termagants (20)
Tervigon - Cluster Spines, Catalyst

Fast Attack
Raveners (6) - Scything Talons, Rending Claws
Harpy - Twin Linked Stranglethorn Cannon

Heavy Support
Mawloc
Trygon Prime - Adrenal Glands

Iron Warriors 2000pts (aka Nick) (from memory, so more or less this +/- an upgrade or two)

HQ
Abbadon
Demon Prince of Nurgle - Wings, Warptime

Elites
Tzeentch Terminators (9) - All Aspiring Champions, Power Fist, Chain Fist, Reaper Autocannon

Troops
Bezerkers (7+Champ) - Champ w/ Power Weapon
Chaos Marines (9+Champ) - Plasma Gun, Lascannon, Icon of Chaos (undivided), Champ w/ Power Weapon
Chaos Marines (9+Champ) - Plasma Gun, Lascannon, Icon of Chaos (undivided), Champ w/ Power Weapon

Heavy Support
Raider - Demonic Possession (Zerkers and Abbadon in here)
Havocs (9+Champ) - 4 Missile Launchers, Icon of Chaos (undivided), Champ w/ Power Weapon

Set Up:
Mission was Dawn of War and the objective was capture and control (5 objectives). I won the roll off to see who went first and I opted to go second. The Iron Warriors set up two units of Chaos mairnes each with a Lascannon, Plasma Gun, Aspiring Champ w/ Power weapons and a chaos icon.

I set up a Tervigon and a unit of Termagants (20) in a building near one of the objectives. The only unit visible was the Termagant unit (Tervigon was completely blocked).

Turn 1: The Iron Warriors either walked/drove everything onto the table from his board edge, keeping most things closer to the center of the table. The Land Raider with Abbadon came on in the center of his army while the huge unit of 9 Tzeentch Terminator Champions came on his right flank. His shooting phase consisted of gunning down a couple of Termagants in the building near the objective.

I walked on the Hive Guard and the Mawloc. I walked the Mawloc behind a building so he couldnt be shot at, same with the Hive Guard. I opted not to Burrow the Mawloc as it would be pretty much certain death on turn 2 with Abbadon waiting for him. I cast Domination from the Tervigon to get an 18" synapse bubble. The Tervigon also created a new unit of 9 to run towards the middle objective with the hope of either drawing out some of his hand to hand combat units or pulling some shooting away from the Tevigon and Gants in the building.

Turn 2: The Iron Warriors moved up the Raider with Abbadon in it and took some more shots at the Termagants running towards the middle objective. He also moved the Tzeentch Terminators further forward and took some more pot shots from the Gants in the building. His Demon Prince of Nurgle moved up in the left building on the hill near the 3 objectives in the middle of the board. After all the shooting was done I lost about 3 gants from the new squad in the middle and about 7 from the original 20 in the building.

This is the turn where the fun begins for the Nids Everything came in except the Raveners and the Zoans (which were the only one I WANTED to come in to blow up the raider). The Stealers came in from the right flank, near the Tzeentch Terminators. I decided based on how the board was set up that I was going to overload one flank to try and make too many things for him to attack at once. So Harpy, Tyrgon Prime, Winged Tyrant, Stealers and Deathleaper all showed up on the right flank. I was hoping to Paroxysm the Terminators but alas, scattered too far away. I basically pumped everything into the terminator unit. So 3 large blasts (from Tervigon/Harpy - all hit) and a large unit of termagants took down 3 of them. I also created another unit of Termagants with the Tervigon and he crapped out (made 8). Those 8 moved onto the objective near my board edge. The 1st created unit moved onto the middle objective (hoping to pull his Demon Prince into the center of the board). I also burrowed the Mawloc at the start of the turn.

Turn 3:
The Iron Warriors decided of all the threats on the one flank that came in, it was the Stealers that needed to die (being deadly, scoring and visible). He moved the Terminators into the building as he new nothing in my army other then the Deathleaper had Frag Grenades. He pumped the entire terminator unit into my stealers only managing to kill 2 of them and he also put a wound on the Broodlord. The Demon Prince moved up as hoped and completely mashed the small Termagant unit holding the middle objective. Abbadon finally got into the frey and hopped out of the Raider and charged (and decimating) the original Termagant unit. The Iron Warriors managed to kill 2 of my 5 troop units. He also managed to put a wound on the Harpy with his Havocs.

I started the turn off by using the Deathleaper's phermone trail to auto hit with the Mawloc on the Terminators, only killing 2 of them due to their 4+ invuln save. Since my reserve roll was at 2+ (Deathleaper and Hive Commander) both my Raveners and Zoans came in. I brought them in on the other side of the board, hoping to draw the demon prince towards the Raveners (as the Shadow in the Warp will hopefully shut down warptime). The Hive Tyrant moves forward to Paroxysm the Terminators (which he does, so they are now WS/BS 1). I also moved the Trygon prime up hoping to leap frog the Terminators into the unit of Chaos Marines behind them. I took a bunch of shots at the Abbadons unit (2 cluster spines and a Stranglethorn Cannon) doing minimal damage. The Hive Guard managed to take 2 wounds off of the Demon Prince and the Zoans kill 2 of the Chaos Marines on the left flank. In the assault phase things really heat up. The Trygon gets 7 wounds on the Chaos Marine unit he charged, easily breaking them and running them off the board. The multi charge of the Deathleaper, Hive Tyrant and Genestealers kill all but 1 of the Tzeentch Terminators leading them to break and they were caught by the Deathleaper and killed. Basically Paroxsym won that combat as the terminators were hitting on 5's.

Turn 4
Last turn was a very deadly turn for The Iron Warriors as his entire left flank was crumbling beneath him. He still had 2 scoring units so all was not lost. Abbadon and his unit head towards the Hive Guard and the Demon Prince heads over to the Zoans. After watching the Trygon Prime effortlessly kill 10 marines in hand to hand the name of the game became putting him down. So the Havocs, Raider and the last unit of Chaos Marines shot everything they had and only managed to bring he down to 3 wounds (he had cover amazingly). Abbadon single handedly kills the two hive guard and the demon prince kills a Zoan and almost kills the pod due to overkill as he multi charged them.

At this point in the game my only thought is covering the objectives so I burrow my Mawloc and put my Deathleaper back into deepstrike. The Trygon rushes forward towards the Havocs in the lower building and the Stealers move forward to capture one of the objectives in my opponents deployment zone. I also move the last termagant unit onto another objective. My Raveners move around the building with the intention of helping the Zoans out. My Harpy Moves forward and charges the Raider since it didnt move (only glances, does nothing) and the Hive Tyrant is out of charge range. The Trygon just walks through the Havocs, doing 6 wounds but takes 2 in return (as he charged into cover) leaving him with 1 as he breaks the unit leaving him to the mercy of the last Chaos Marine squad in the building. The Demon Prince casts warptime but rolls perils due to Shadow in the Warp and drops himself to one wound (the hive guard did a couple earlier in the game). He does a minor amount of damage on the Raveners and the Raveners in turn score 6 rending wounds killing him.

Turn 5
Things at this point are winding down for The Iron Warriors and he starts focusing on the objectives. He tries to tank shock the stealers off of the objective near his board edge, only to roll a '1' immobilizing the Raider. Abbadon and his unit starts running towards the Termagants holding my lone objective. His last chaos unit fails to put a wound on the Trygon Prime (failed to wound on the plasma gun, rolled a 1 to hit with the lascannon and I made my saves against the bolters).

The Mawloc misses Abbadon's unit and scatters 8" away. The Deathleaper appears in the middle of the board to contest the middle objective in case Abbadon turns around. I put a couple more wounds on the Bezerkers with the Harpy and Tervigon. My Zoans totally wiff on the Raider and the Hive Tyrant fails to do any damage in hand to hand. The Trygon licks his chops while staring up at the last Marine unit. The Chaos marines fail to take off his last wound and the Trygon kills 5 of them, breaking the unit.

Turn 6
The game continues as I roll a "6" for random game length. At this point all that is left for The Iron Warriors army is his immobilized Raider and the Bezerkers with Abbadon. The raider opens up on the Stealers and they go to ground so it does no damage. Abbadon gets into charge range of the objective in my deployment zone.

I re-burrow the mawloc and put the Deathleaper back into deepstrike in case the game goes to turn 7. I blow up the raider with the Zoans and I fly the Tyrant over the building and Paroxysm Abbadon and his cronies. I also cast Catalyst on the last
Termagant unit. One thing to note as well was my Tervigon was actually on TOP of that building he is standing beside. He was just really wobbly up there so we put him at the base of it :)

Turn 7
The game keeps going as I roll a "4". Despite being WS/BS 1 Abbadon and the 4 Zerkers manage to easily wipe out the Termagants and putting them on the last objective now tying the game.

I try to deep strike onto Abbadon but miss...again (huge miss too lol). The Deathleaper also comes in contesting the last objective. My Flying Tyrant Paroxysms Abbadon and the Zerkers. Abbadon still does a wound to the Tyrant as the Tyrant charges him and then the Tyrant kills all the Zerkers.

Final Result

Tyranids win with 1 objective leaving only Abbadon alive with 2 wounds. I still had my stealers, Tyrant, Mawloc, Tyrgon, Zoans, Tervigon, Harpy and the Deathleaper. Great game, super fun army and Nick (the Iron Warriors Player) was great to play
against

Tyranid Player of the Match: Trygon Prime. He killed 27 marines in total (this is including breaking them). Not recognizing the threat he posed right off the bat basically cost the Iron Warriors the game as he ate 2 of his 3 troops.

Chaos Player of the Match: Abbadon as he was the only one to actually do anything. He killed about 20 Termagants and 2 Hive Guard, not too much, but its still 3 kill points

I figured when I took this army that it would just be a "fun, casual" army but it ended up playing really well and was most importantly really fun to play

Octocon 4! Revenge of the Medicore ELDAR!

Octocon 4

I have been living in Calgary, Alberta for almost 4 years now. Ever since GW Canada removed the Conflict Tournaments I have to say there isnt much of a tournament scene here. So I was delighted to see that there would be 3 tournaments in 3 months this fall! I already finished the first tournament called "September Salvo", which my 'Nids did splendidly and I squeaked out first place.

Next up is Octocon 4, which is one of Calgary's largest tournaments and is generally run each year. This year had a great turn out (26 for 40k, and 18 for Fantasy). The tournament is 2000pts and since my Tyranids are no where near finished and I wouldnt be caught dead playing either my Dark Eldar or Space Marines I ended up going with my Eldar. After checking out what I own I realized that my army is very outdated. When I painted my army it was in the middle of 3rd Ed using the old Craftworld Rules (ie. real seer councils and black guardians) so my current list is filled with too many warlocks, farseers and guardians. This is what I ended up taking:

HQ:
Farseer
Yriel

Elites:
9 Howling Banshees + Exarch
Wave Serpent w/ Bright Lances

Troops:
3 x 10 Guardians w/ Scatter Laser and Warlock
10 Storm Guardians w/ 2xFlamers and Warlock
Wave Serpent w/ Eldar Missile Launcher
9 Dire Avengers + Exarch

Fast Attack
2x Vyper Jetbikes w/ Star Cannons

Heavy Support
Wraith Lord w/ Bright Lance
2 Warwalkers w/ Scatter Lasers/Star Cannons
Falcon Grav Tank w/ Scatter Laser, Shurkien Cannon and Holo Fields

Round 1 - Annihilation vs. Imerpial Guard

I have only played Guard maybe twice in the last 12 years, so I figured it was a good time to get re-educated on what the army actually does. Needless to say that it has changed ALOT since the last time I played it lol. I figured that since he had all tanks, 2 Flyers and a crazy amount of anti Armor weaponry it would be a good idea to hold my entire army in reserve so it wouldnt get shot up on the first turn. This is a new tatic I wanted to try for this army anyways since I have Yriel, who is an Autarch, and he gives me +1 to all my reserve rolls. What I DIDNT know is that the guard have a unit that gives me -1 to my reserve rolls and makes me re-roll which edge my outflankers come on (which greatly changed the game) as well as allow him to re-roll which edge his stuff comes out on. We find out that the mission we are playing is basically a straight anhilation using opposite table Quarters as set up.

High Points:
- Watching him shoot almost everything into my Falcon multiple turns and only accomplish blowing off two guns.
- Having my Wraithlord flip his outflanking Demolisher on the second turn of the game.
- My Banshees and Dire Avengers came in right as my side of the table was about to be overrun by veterans. The Avengers took out one squad, while the banshees minced the other

Low Points
- Some crazy bad reserve rolls. My farseer and banshees didnt come onto the table until turn 4, which meant I was only able to use 1 psychic power the entire game lol
- Having Yriel (who is LD 10) fail a Pinning test (he and the remainder of the guardian squad)
- One of my guardian units rolled "double 1's" for their difficult terrain test when coming in from reserve RIGHT in front of a hell hound. Needless to say that squad was gone pretty freaking fast lol

Final Result:
The game is an exact tie. Both sides do 8 kill points, and based on the tourneys mission you then go to victory points. We add everything up and Wes got 576 on me and I get 575 on him. So I freaking lost by 1 VP LOL. All in all it was a great game and Wes was a fantastic person to play against. Great way to start the tourney.

Round 2 - Sieze Ground vs. Marines

My second game was against Marines. Based on what he had I felt fairly confident that I would do well, as the only plain old marines he had were an assault squad with a chaplain and a commander, a unit in a rhino, a unit with a razorback and a large unit of scouts that go with the techmarine. I figured since he had so much anti armor weaponry I would hold all my armor in reserve.

High Points:
- Some of the most insane luck ever when rolling for cover saves. I swear I made about 90% of the 4+ cover saves I was called onto make
- Yriel Finally gets into combat and almost single handedly kills an entire scout squad
- My banshees did 11 power weapon wounds in one turn (because of doom...which is GOD lol) to a tactical squad that was holding an objective

Low Points:
- Except for cover saves I just couldnt get a roll to go for me the entire game. At one point I had 2xBright lances, Missile Launcher, Star Cannon (into rear armor)and a Scatter Laser followed by 5 Str 9 attacks and 3 Str 5 attacks in hand to hand combat on a Rhino and only manage to blow off the storm bolter...sigh
- I made some bad descions through out the game. There were 3 or 4 things I really should of done differently both in regards to set up and what I did with certain units in the game. The main thing I did wrong was not focus on the objective as much as I should of.

Final Result:
Another tie (we both held one objective). We add up victory points and he does 100 more then me, so it is counted again as an exact tie. All in all he wasnt a terribly fun person to play against. I tried livening it up here and there but alas to no avail. I would say this was my least fav game of the tourney. Main thing I learned is to 100% keep your eye on the objective. The only reason why I lost is I forgot about it.

Round 3 - Capture and Control - Orks

After forgetting the objective completely in the previous game I vowed to make it my only focus. I found out that my opponent had a 10 man nob squad w/ a painboy AND a 5 man mega nobz squad with a mad dok special character (so both units have a 5+ invuln save and feel no pain). As we read over the scenario I started wracking my brains on how on earth I was going to deal with those two units.

High Points:
- My play in general. This was by far my best played game. I really focused on the objective, I set up "bait" units and all my specialist units were used for exactly what they should of been. Everything was set up as well as I could of and I never lost focus on the objective.
- There were many really funny moments during the game. My two favs were watching the Storm Boyz unit deviate away from my army on the the turn they deepstriked in only to be bladestormed TO DEATH the following turn. My second fav was watching MY ENTIRE ARMY shoot at 3 guys, 2 turns in a row only to have the remaining two (one wound each) heavy flamer, then charge my unit of dire avengers. The visual of watching these two complete loons in mega armor with a million little disks sticking out of their armor/faces emerge from a cloud of smoke where their unit was and come in and mulch some puny eldar was great.

Low Points:
- Everything went according to plan. I felt bad that Ian rolled quite terribly in the first half of the game on his 500pts+ Nob squad (couldnt by a feel no pain roll) which allowed me to eventually break the squad and help march them off the board. He eventually made up for it with his Mega Nobs though as I mentioned in the "high points"

Final Result:
A complete Massacre. I held both objectives at the end of the game and all he had left was a Deff Dred. It was a really fun game and he was a really good sport about it. We spent about 5 mins after the game laughing about his energizer bunny mega nobz and how they wouldnt quit till they tasted Eldar blood.

Round 4 - Annihilation - Tyranids

Nathan had a monstrous tyranid army. He had 4 units of 24 Termigants with "Without Number" and two Hive Tyrants with 3 Tyrant Guard each (so 10 Toughness 6 wounds each with a 3+ min armor save). This is the first game in the tournament where I thanked my lucky stars that I brought as many Star Cannons as I did, because if I didnt have them, this game would of been a massacre. Nathan was my fav player at the tournament, and this was by far my fav game. The only sucky thing was time was really running out at this point and I was focusing on getting through the game instead of taking pictures, so alas there arent any (which is a shame, since his army looked fairly nice).

High Points:
- For the first time this tournament I used Yriels electicity storm, which was just devestating. In one round of combat he killed 23 Termigaunts LOL (12 with the first shot, then 11 on the overkill). The best part was there was one gaunt left, so he remained in Hand to hand and couldnt be shot at, which was good because there were 3 Zoanthropes just itching to bast him into next year.
- My banshees managed to killed 9 Tyranid warriors in hand to hand with only taking one casualty
- My 10 Storm Guardians managed to kill a unit of 24 termigants in hand to hand by themselves. If they handnt be charged by a SECOND unit of 24 they would of made it till the end of the game lol

Low Points:
- Having no concept of just how good 2xTwin Linked Devourers on a hive tyrant really are. I was losing a squad of guardians A TURN to this thing. Ugh. Luckily I was able to bring them down before the caused too much death to my forces

Final Result:
I ended up winning the game. This game really could of gone either way for me I have to say. For starters the game started with Dawn of War set up, and I won the roll to go first. I was able to pin most of his forces back in his zone, and only two units of Termigaunts and his Devourer Tyrant were on the board. Everything else had to walk on. That way I was able to focus on that tyrant, then switch targets to his other tyrant who had a venom cannon. If they both started on the table the game would of been very different. The last couple of combats also really changed the outcome of the game. My Banshees/Farseer were able to make 2 key leadership tests at the end of the game. If they failed either that was 2 VPs for Nathan and he would of won. The game was really back and forth also, which made for a great end to the day.

Tournament Results:
I came in 6th overall. I seemed to come in 2nd or 3rd in almost every category lol. I was really hoping to win best painted, but another Eldar army won. It was nicely painted and bright, which I think gave it the edge. I managed to do very very well in the one spot I typically come in the middle of the pack, and that is sportsmanship. I got 41 out of 40 (10pts per game) and was voted fav opponent by someone. I had a really good time, and I am already looking forward to the next one. Below is a shot of the armies that were nominated for best painted. The Eldar army on the far left won.

Things I learned about 5th Ed Eldar:

1) Regular Guardians are possibly the single worst unit in the game. With only 12" guns, T3 and a 5+ armor save they are good for only one thing...giving up VPs. My Storm Guardians on the other hand were amazing, and did something pretty much every game.
2) Mech Mech Mech. Vehicles are king, as well as having the ability to blow them up. I seriously lacked in both departments, especially playing Eldar. As I work on this army I am going to phase out all my footslogging guardians and add more dire avengers with Wave Serpents. I am also going to paint up a second Falcon because even though it got shot at ALOT every game, it only died in one of them. In each of those falcons I am going to put 6 fire dragons.
3) Remove all star cannons for scatter lasers...ESPECIALLY on the war walkers lol.
4) Yriel is god. He managed to live through every game and was just a destroyer when he got into combat. I...love....this...character lol.
Next Up: Conquest Calgary!

Waaagh GT 40k 2009 Tournament Awesomeness

My first 40k tournament was a blast. It was in Alameda in an old Naval Base aboard the USS Hornet, a WW2 carrier/museum (see picture). Our games were flanked by an Avenger Torpedo Bomber, and a still in restoration Wildcat Fighter, so the setting was just awesome. The USS Hornet. An old WW2 carrier that also served to pick up the Gemini and Apollo crews A restored Avenger Torpedo bomber. Our game tables are just to the right of this thing. Very inspirational. A "being restored" Wildcat. Can't wait to see it finished. There were also a number of jets and helicopters lying around. I didn't get to see the flight deck this year. Hopefully next year. People loved this Mr. Potatohead Ork Stompa conversion. Awesome. 3 games on Saturday. My attitude going into this was "I'm going to get annihilated in every game, so I'm here to a) learn the rules really well, b) find out how to play IG properly, c) be as silly as possible by remembering a and b while my army was being murdered and d) learn about playing different armies since I know nothing about any of them except guard and SM" All 4 were achieved. Game 1 Game 1 was against a very nice guy with a Chaos Space Marine army Nurgle themed. They had some great paint jobs. He helped me with the rules alot, but about the only damage I did to his army was to blow the legs off his Defiler (which was in a trench so in cover, although we probably should have ruled line of sight for that one). His daemon prince then came out of the land raider by killing one of his champions and did the koolaid guy to my poor infantry platoon who were protecting the objective inside a bunker. We both giggled about this one. My right flank was too far away from the action to do a whole lot, and I couldn't do much damage to his objective squad also in a bunker to take it. Major Loss. Lessons Learned: This isn't FOW. Infantry can't protect crap even in a bunker unless they have support weapons or some kind of H2H really close at hand. Stuff can just walk on it.. Spreading out the force too much will allow it to get eaten. Also, I need more infantry, or at least mobile troop choices since my heavy weapons squads are for the most part immobile. Use orders much more often to take down larger vehicles. Fire EVERYTHING every turn. Once I'm in H2H, I'm dead so what the heck. Smoke is useful (my opponent used it twice). G2G is also useful if you're going to die and you're dug in. Got to remember ordience weapons roll 2d6 pick highest for penetration. I forgot this a lot. The evil Chaos Marines of Evilness Game 1 Start Game 1 End. Lots of lessons learned on this one. Never made it to that bunker on the right. Was too busy fighting a winged Nurgle daemon with a chimea and veteran squad... Game 2 This was against a nice guy who teaches 40k to little kids at his home store. He was a REALLY well painted SM army. I think he won favourite army overall. I did a bit better in this one, nuking his land raider, and with tank fire waxing the terminaters inside. He had some snipers set up in a corner with some kind of "give them a 2+ save" terrain alteration that his techmarine could do. I wasted time trying to shoot at them when I should have been driving forward at full speed. He drop podded behind my tanks and destroyed a couple, and I had to waste more time shooting them. My tanks were so close together that they tended to get in each other's way as well, so traffic control was a problem. That said, I was able to hold onto objectives a bit better this time. It was ironic in this game since it took place on a jungle table, so my desert guys were WAY out of place and a passing 12 year old pointed this out to me. Minor Loss. I was getting better, and I learned a LOT this game. Lessons Learned: When facing deep striking forces, deploy in depth (more than a scout sentinal) so that you have something that can counter punch a DS. Dreadnaughts are easily killed by tanks. My stuff CAN kill stuff, even heavily armored stuff like Land Raiders and Space Marines. Don't get distracted by units that are dug in somewhere that doesn't matter. They will only harass. Spread the tanks out to get good overlapping fields of fire in many driections otherwise they'll get in each other's way. You need multiples shots against stuff even with lascannons. Buy a techpriest and 5 servitors to repair tanks as its not that often when you roll a 5-6 for pentration. Damaged vehicles are more likely and far more disrupting since you have to protect them from assaults. In a tournament, you have to keep a good pace because otherwise you will run out of time. We didn't, but still. Game 3 My favourite game. It was against Daemons. The guy was great. His son was playing a nicely converted ork army 1 table over. The whole table was empty the first turn, so my boys advanced as best they could. I placed my heavy weapon teams on top of the objective figuring since they couldn't move, may as well help to protect the vitals. I also deployed in depth to protect against his beaming in. This was a scarey army to look at (see pic below) with 3 Soul Grinders, and 2 Greater Daemons to deal with. His Keeper of Secrets was AWESOME. It was an 40k Eldar Titan with chains all over it. Looked like something from Silent Hill. Great stuff. This guy knew he wasn't going to win generalship either so we were out for fun. His bloodthirster beamed in right in front of 2 Russes, and 3 LC sentinals, and we nuked him which felt good since my BS 3 means I miss a lot. On that flank, his keeper trashed a lot of stuff. Also some Tzneetch flamers beamed down and flame grilled my command squad and some infantry. Their only option was to charge these things before getting flamed again, a battle we eventually lost. The fun part was the soul Grinders though. My tanks took down 1, but a 2nd one walked over to my Chimera that was driving to the opposite objective. The grinder blew it to crap with its SomethingEvilSounding gun, and half the veteran squad exited the vehicle onfire. The survivors made it to some cover, and after missing all 3 melta gun shots, my newly minted det pack guy in desperation threw his pack at the HUGE machine bearing down on them. The Grinder caught the pack in its mouth, swallowed, and exploded in shower of green goo. We high fived after this one as the best hit of the game. I voted this guy my favourite player, and hope to see him next year (he actually won player's favourite opponent award at the end of the tournament). Major Loss but oh so fun. Lessons Learned: Daemons are not that scarey. They have lots of saves (feel no pain etc.), but stick to the plan, and all will be well. Use the veterans. They are your best guys... Maybe base an army around them and give them mobility. Do I buy a valkarie?? hmm.. Template weapons are great, but the scatter dice means that once they get in under the guns, you'd better have some direct fire backup. My favourite game and player of the tournament Game 3... Where are all the daemons....???? Hawkins! Take that building in the middle! Its bound to be important or something.. Best moment of the game. The blue grinder is actually a crater! Game 4 The next day I played a fellow guard player. I was looking forward to this because I wanted to learn how to play Guard specifically better. He had several tanks, a chemical hell hound, a valkarie with vets, and a very large unit of guys (30-40 I think). And some Ogryns played by some power armored infantry that looked really neat. His valkarie was also awesome as it had repelling ropes out the back door! Not qutie as fun game however as I was actually trying to be more tactical. I was able to open several tanks (his hellhound died from Bring It Down fire from my autocannons), but I was unable to take out his Valk which provided harrassing fire. Most interesting in this game were the Ogryns. My Demolisher managed with plazma cannon and Demolisher fire to whittle them down to 2/10 + the commisar Lord. But once they made it to my infantry squads, it was no more infantry squads. Fun game, and lots learned. He didn't have enough troops to capture objectives, so only a minor loss this time. Lessons Learned: I'm going to give my Ogryns (5) Tallarn Headgear using greenstuff! I think it will look awesome, but I will need to practice first. My tanks are nice against other tanks. Although battle cannons against front armor isn't all that great. Lascannons are better but again..... BS 3 = sadness. I need to outfit ALL my infantry squads with powerweapon sergents, or maybe commisars, or maybe priests. I need better H2H defense, otherwise my squads are useless. I need more squads. Having 2 platoons might be useful since I'll have 3 order giving units then. Will drop the 3 sentinals, and 1 LR (they were borrowed anyway), and fill up the points with other stuff. 3 Leman Russes is quite enough. Multilasers aren't as useless as I thought. 3 shots is nothing to be scoffed at. Lumbering Bohemoth means that you get the the turret shot for free, but you can still only fire 2 weapons total when you move, not everything. A little guard on guard action Game 4 end. Lots of burning armor, but we lost the center objective. Game 5 This was against an older gentleman who's sons were also playing at the tourney. He was playing shooty marines. This mission was annililation, and at this point I kind of knew what I was doing (though still a little shakey rulewise). We had both only played 6 games each, so were both a bit shakey on the rules. I was a bit worried we would run out of time since we kept having to read the rules, so I took this game more seriously than I should have. I also smelled blood when I realized that his guys weren't going to assault me. There was a difficult going river crossing the board which slowed his advance. My gun line lined up at the back of the table shelled the hell out of his troops which simply couldn't reply with the same kind of firepower. I blew up 2 bikes, a squad of assault marines, some scouts, 2 dreadnaughts and half his terminators who dropped in in the middle of the board. I wondered why they didn't close assault me until he fired 2 barrages of cyclone missiles at me which, with my men in cover and g2g did surprisingly little. In retrospect I should have tried to have more fun with this game and been more helpful to the guy, but I didn't want to accidentally break the rules, but was worried about running out of time, that and I finally had a chance to blow the crap out of something. Major victory, but I should have played differently so I consider it a moral loss. I alas don't have any pics of it since we were rushed for time (and I hadn't had lunch so was scarfing down a hotdog). My favourite part of this game was actually explaining to a lot of passers-by what the hell we were all doing including a very nice little old lady who was an ex navy nurse. She asked if there were any girls at this event and I pointed out the only one (who I think was the girlfriend of the only Tyranid player), and she went over and said how glad she was to see girls at these "boys only events". How cute. Lessons Learned: I know the game well enough now that I should take it easy on newer players as the older players have on me. But I don't think I can help them effectively yet since I haven't played THAT much. A gun line isn't half bad, but some kind of deep strike is vital All in all, the tournament was awesome. Got lots of compliments on my paint job, and the 3 guys from the first day voted me their favourite player of the tournament which made me feel like I went in with the right attitude. I consider my Loss ratio to be very improved over the course of the weekend. We went from major loss to major win almost linerally! Lots of ideas for next year, and my "improved" army. Now I've finally got the 40k bug. This just in... Checked the website: http://dagrandwaaaghgt.com/2009_gt_results And I came 16th /38 players! So even though I got killed, I actually did fairly well. Nice.

'Ard Boyz Semi-Final Recap

Saturday Aug 8th marked the semi-finals of this years 'Ard boyz. I played at Phenoix games in Kitchener and had a blast! There was 20 people that showed up to duke it out for the right to represent Canada at the finals in Chicago Sept 19th. I took my Dark Angels (RavenDeathwing). Here's what the army looked like (things were shifted to allow for taking advantage of wound allocation):

HQ
Belial with LC
Sammuel on Jet Bike

Elites
Belials Terminator Squad with Standard, Medic, 3 LC, 2 TH/SS and a Cyclone
5 x Grey Knight Terminators with a psycannon and psychic hood

Troops
Terminator Squad with Assault Cannon and Chainfist
Terminator Squad with Heavy Flamer, Chainfist x2, LC
Terminator Squad with Heavy Flamer, Chainfist x2, LC
Terminator Squad with Heavy Flamer, Chainfist x2, TH/SS
Sammuels Ravenwing Attack Squad 6 bikes with Medic, 2 Meltaguns, Powerfist and Attack bike with Multimelta
Ravenwing Attack Squad with 6 Bikes, 2 Meltaguns, Powerfist and Attack bike with Multimelta

Game 1 vs Necrons:
The Necron list looks strangely light for 2500 pts and consisted of the Night Bringer, Lord with Orb (and other crap), 6 Immortals, 3 Wraiths, 3 squads of 15 warriors, 6 destroyers, 2 tomb spiders, 8 scrabs and a monolith. He had first turn so I scouted closer and then he moved closer still attacking my one bike squad with scarbs. I was in CC with the lord turn 2 and knocked him and his unit and another unit down and proceeded to escort the broken unit off the board while picking apart the rest of the army slowly. The biggest highlight for him was when the monolith arrived and dropped both attack bikes with one of its ordance attacks. The end result was I phased him out turn 5 and had achieved all other bonus points to get a grand total of 24 to start! So needless to say I was feeling pretty good about myself.

Game 2 vs CSM
The list was a double lash list with sorcer, DP, Beserkers in Land Raider, Thousand sons in Rhino, 2 CSM units in Rhino (2 plasma, 2 melta), Chosen in Rhino (2 flamer, 2 melta), 3 Oblits, and a Vindy. It was also a dawn of war msn. I won the roll to go first and deployed at the half way point. He said everything was coming in turn 1. I scout moved and then turbo boosted my bikes into a line along his table edge, my Deathwing assaulting terminators deepstruck to fill the holes. A bad roll for the Comd Squad prevented me from having an unbroken line across his table edge. End result was that he was able to get a wedge into the middle of my line and then a rhino had it's combi-bolter shot off as it squished an attack bike on one flank allowing the rest of his army to roll in as a tight block. Try as I might my re-enforcements would only come in piece meal and the way I was spread out meant I spent a long time moving to get into a position where I could fit. To his credit my opponent was able to keep my off balance and was able to chew up my units a little at a time. End result was I got tabled and didn't get any points.

Game 3 vs CSM
I have never seen a list that appeared to be so under powered and then prove to be so deadly. He had 2 DP with wings, a Greater Demon, 3 Dreads with extra CCW, 4 squads of 10 lesser demons and 6 CSM squads with twin melta or plasma in rhinos. I won the roll to go first and my bike moved around to try and get melta shots on his dreads and 2 rhinos who were on the table. I immobilzed one and stunned the other. I also managed to take out a rhino. Then all of his demons showed up and my bikes all dissappeared!! He continued to take major bites out of the terminators with the DPs and Dreads while soaking up the casuatlies with the lesser demons. On the 4th turn his remaining 4 rhinos loaded with troops showed up just in time to clean up the remaining few terminators (although he really didn't need there help). End result was I got tabled again but had a blast!

So I ended up 13th out of 20, which isn't great but I'm already looking forward to next year. I'm looking at taking something like this all painted up as pre-heresy Imperial Fists (although with the new Space Wolf book coming in Oct, this could change rather quickly).

HQ
Vulkan (will be fistafied!)
Lysander

Elites
5 TH/SS Termies
5 TH/SS Termies

Troops
4 tactical squads with Meltagun and Multimelta in Rhinos

Fast Attack
3 Land Speeders with Hvy Flamer and Multimelta

Hvy Support
2 Land Raiders with Multimeltas

total 2490 pts

One of the options I'm looking at dropping 2 of the speeders for a Drop Pod mounted Dread nought with Multimelta and Hvy Flamer. I'd love to hear what you guys think. I'm hoping to get the coverage of the GD in Toronto up soon by knee surgery is slowing me down a fair amount. I will post a picture of my test models for the Imperials Fist once I get that far, but I can hear the Thunderhawk calling my name so will see what is nexted after the Master of the Ravenwing is all done (and I will post pictures of that).

'Ard Boyz Qualifier recap

Saturday July 11 marked the beginning of this years 'Ard boyz. I played a qualifying round at the Wizards Tower in Napean and had a blast! There was 10 people that showed up to duke it out for the right to represent Ottawa at the semi-finals in Kitchener August 8th. I ended up taking my Dark Angels (RavenDeathwing). Here's what the army looked like:

HQ
Belial with LC
Sammuel on Jet Bike

Elites
Belials Terminator Squad with Standard, Medic, 3 LC, 2 TH/SS and a Cyclone
5 x Grey Knight Terminators with a psycannon and psychic hood

Troops
Terminator Squad with Assault Cannon and Chainfist
Terminator Squad with Heavy Flamer, Chainfist, LC
Terminator Squad with Heavy Flamer, Chainfist, LC
Terminator Squad with Heavy Flamer, Chainfist, TH/SS
Sammuels Ravenwing Attack Squad 6 bikes with Medic, 2 Meltaguns, Plasma pistol, Powerfist and Meltabombs, Attack bike with Multimelta
Ravenwing Attack Squad with 6 Bikes, 2 Meltaguns, Power weapon and Meltabombs, Attack bike with Multimelta

Round 1 vs John and his Iron Hands
John had 6 full tactical squads with razerbacks, 3 full devastator squads and a command squad. I won the roll for first turn and took it. I deployed one Ravenwing squad and Sammuel behind cover on one side of the board. John deployed his army along the entire length of his table edge. I scout moved to within 12" and he failed to win the Inituative. From there on I was able to bring down my Terminators and roll him up. We played the full 6 turns and at the end I had 2 Objectives and more kill points, plus 3 of the other bonus points for a total of 23 Battle points. Not a bad start!

Round 2 vs Traitor Guard
There was only 2 tanks and over 200+ infantry in this army. I again won the roll to go first and did. I deployed both Ravenwing squads and Sammuel in the centre of the board behind cover. The guard decided not to deploy. I turbo boost across for scout and then at the start of my turn 3 Terminator squads came down. I ran them after moving my bikes and completely covered his table edge. Initially the ruling was that everything that wasn't outflanking was dead, but we discussed and I said that if he tank shocked then he would be able to move onto the board behind the tanks. He did and was able to get 2 tanks, 2 veteran squads with 3 plasmaguns each, 2 Pl Comd Squads with 4 flamers and his Coy Comd Squad. He managed to kill 3 bikes and 2 Terminators. They wiped him out. Marbo and his outflanking rough riders were each able to kill a unit of terminators before they were wiped out. I ended up getting full 24 points!

Round 3 vs Will Paul and his Orks
Will was running 4 Battle wagons with Thruaka, Mad Doc, Nobz in Mega armour, 20 Ard Boyz, 15 Burnaz, 20 Tank hunters, 15 Commandos with 2 Burnaz and Snikrot and 3 Def copters. He won the roll to go first and chose to do so. I however, won the roll to see who got to move first for scout moves. All the bikes raced to my flank with the intention of killing the Battle Wagon loaded with Burnaz. I made sure that I was far enough away that I wouldn't get flamed first turn. After a hard fought battle where my dice were hot (the Assault Cannon armed Terminator killed 2 Battle wagons (one on the front armour)) I managed to table Will and get another bonus point for a total of 21 Battle points.

I ended the tournament in first place with a total of 68 out of a potential 72 Battle points. So I'm heading to Kitchener for the Semi-finals against all the other winners on 8 August, wish me luck!

Legio Cybernetica vs Task Force Redemption

+++++CLASSIFIED INNER CIRCLE ONLY+++++
Report of Fallen on Falintime VI, 2 x Fallen have constructed an army of thinking machine called the "Legio Cybernetica". Elements of 1st and 2nd Company lead by Capt Belial and Interrogator-Chaplain Boreas. Prime Objective: The Fallen must be captured and force to repent at all costs! Secondary Objective: The distruction of all the heretical machines.
+++++REPORT ENDS+++++

This was a Deathwing (played by Paul Levy) vs RavenDeathwing. This was the final game at King Con II (Kingston's annual gaming convention), thanks again to the organizers for doing such a great job!!

My army list was:

HQ
Belieal with Lightning claws

Interrogator-Chaplain in Termy armour

Troops
Belial Comd Squad with 3 Lighting Claws, 2 x TH/SS with Cyclone, Standard and Apothocary (nasty unit, 15 LC attacks each and rerolling and wound to hit plus Belials 5 lightning claw and the Chappies 4 Power weapon attacks, coupled with 8 TH attacks ouch!)

2 x Termy squads with Assault cannon, Chain fist one squad with a TH/SS

Termy squad with Hvy Flamer, Chain fist and lightning claw

Termy squad with Hvy Flamer, Chain fist and lightning claw

Fast Atk
Ravenwing Atk Sqn with 6 bikes and 2 meltaguns, Atk bike with Multimelta, Sgt with PF, Meltabombs and Plasma Pistol

Paul's Deathwing

HQ
Belial with Lighting Claws

Elites
2 x Dreadnoughts with Lascannon and Missile Launcher

Troops
3 x Terminator Squads with Assault cannon and Chain fist
1 x Terminator squads with Hvy Flamer and Chain fist
1 x Terminator Squad with Cyclone Missile Launcher
1 x Terminator Squad with TH/SS and Cyclone Missile Launcher

We were playing a normal game with the 12" deployment zone and each of us having an objective in our deployment zones. The secondary objective was one of the models or squads in the army was carrying crypto codes and by killing that model you got the codes. Paul gave the codes to the terminator squad he positioned on his objective and I gave mine to the Comd squad. Paul won the role for first turn and deployed across the length of the board.

Given his deployment I wanted to use the Ravenwing to have the majority of my army fighting the smallest amount of his army. With both the objectives on my left flank, I focused there with all the bikes.

With the latest FAQ for the main rule book, it is now ok for bikes with the scout special rule to turbo boost for their scout move. The Ravenwing zoomed across the table using the terrain to mask their movements as much as possible. I tried to steal the initiative but failed miserably with a 1. So the game commenced!

Legio Turn 1
As expected the Legio's wasn't happy about these bikers sneaking around on their flanks, so they executed assault pattern bravo kill them all and moved into position to take out as many bikers as possible. They were successful in only killing 2 bikes but those bikes were the Sgt and a meltagun.

TFR Turn 1
That wasn't enough and the bikes now had visual confirmation of the Fallen. Time to call in the Deathwing. I deep struck 3 full squads (2 x Hvy flamer squads and the Comd Squad with Belial and Boreas). I made sure to position them so that the 2 Hvy Flamer squads would be be charged and allowed my Comd Squad to charge next turn. My remaining bikes swung around to engage the Dreadnought with their melta weapons with the atk bike's multimelta turning the Dread into slag. The the combined fire of 3 squads was enough to take down several of the blasphemis machines.

After TFR shooting

Legio Turn 2
The infernal machines began marching forward towards TFR. Several of the units who were woefully out of position. Legio Commander advanced with his squad of TH/SS while 2 other units of Cybernetic monstosities moved to trap TFR in the center. One of the inital Legio squads attacked the closest TFR squad killing 2 but losing 3 of their own in the process.

TFR Turn 2
Another terminator squad zeroed in on the homing beacons produced by the bikes and teleported in to provide supporting fire. The bikes repositioned to deal with one of the flanking squads and brought a TFR Hvy Flamer squad with them. Belial yelled a war cry and the Comd Squad rushed forward into the Legio's TH/SS squad lead by the mad tinkerer. In the ensueing hand to hand both Belials died along with the entire TH/SS unit leaving Boreas directing the battle on behalf of TFR.

Legio Turn 3
With the right flank of the Legio destroyed the Cognitor engines attempted to stop the crushing advance of TFR. The remaining Dreadnought advanced towards the biggest concentration of enemies killing one with his lascannon. The remaining Legio units advanced towards the same concentration. Bother Lazarus one of the Hvy Flamer terminators continued to fight on despite losing the rest of his squad in combat.

TFR Turn 3
The bikes of the Ravenwing rush forward again to take down the remaining Dreadnought. They are sucessful and the massive killing monstrocity suffers a violent explosion. Boreas leading the Comd Squad charges across the open plain and starts ripping apart another unit of blasted machines. The charge is so devistating it wipes out the entire squad.

Legio Turn 4
With the loss of all command the machines continue to execute their last programs and continue advancing on the highest concentration of enemy. The are to far for hand to hand and their shooting is ineffective.

TFR Turn 4
Boreas leads the Comd Squad on another decimating charge, eliminating all of the cursed machines and ensuring the capture of both Fallen.

I had a blast playing this game, Paul was fantastic and with a different deployment this would have been a very different game. I hope I get the chance to play against him in the future.

+++++CLASSIFIED INNER CIRCLE ONLY+++++
2 x Fallen recovered. Interrogation commenced. Capt Belial, expected to make recovery.
+++++REPORT ENDS+++++.
